A culturally rich civic space within the new Waterloo Metro Quarter, Badumurru Place is named for ‘Water Pathway’ in the language of the Gadigal people (Badu - Water, Murru - Pathway), acknowledging the site’s history of wetlands, waterways and gathering.
Guided by Aileen Sage’s Public Art Strategy, the plaza houses three significant sculptural commissions by artists Nadeena Dixon, Carmen Glynn-Braun and Lorna Munro.
MAAT typeset Munro’s illuminated verse, and developed a simple interpretive signage overlay that sits lightly in the public space. The use of brass echoes the bronze and brass inserts in the work of Munro and Glynn-Braun; and the chamfered forms follow the angles of the off-form concrete, creating vertical and horizontal text surfaces at a low datum accessible for all visitors.
